How to make the MX-5 ND even better
There was no shortage of praise when Mazda released the fourth generation MX-5 at the end of 2014. The MX-5 ND seemed to be going back to it's roots.
As comfortable as a NC but smaller, lighter and as nimble as the NA or NB. It seemed that Mazda had found it's swing again and the ND was an instanst hit with the crowd!
True to the spirit of the NA, the "Jinba Ittai" slogan finally found a worhty succesor that bares the right to carry it. Horse and rider truly as one again.
So, you would think there's not much to improve? Well, the car in question is a 2018 model with a 129HP, 1,5 enige under it's hood. With a car where the main focus is on handling and driving experience, this number seems to be just right.
However, keep in mind that the NA and NB both made similar numbers, albeit coming from a 1.8 engine. There is the 2.0 liter model of course, packing 160HP (not to mention the later released "RF" model with 181HP) but this model is of course more expensive.
So, the owner of the car in question wanted a little more "oomph" and make it even more fun to drive, so he opted for a stage one turbo kit from B.B.R.
B.B.R. creates of the shelf tuning components for all MX-5 generations and the kit itself looks like it came with the ND from factory. That's no surprise as the words "factory" and "black" can be found
quite a lot in the spec list of the stage 1 turbo kit which you can find if you click >> here <<.
The kit comes plug and play, only a small modification is needed to fit the intercooler. Size wise it fits perfectly between bumper and radiator.
Even the intercooler hoses look if they came from factory!
The icing on the cake (in my humble opinion) is the carbon fibre heat shield for the TSX28-67R twin-scroll turbocharger. The attention to detail and quality of this kit approaches perfection. There might be cheaper or more DIY oriented turbo solutions for most MX-5's but with B.B.R. you get what you pay for and that is quality. According to B.B.R. you should end up with around 210HP with is about 80 more HP compared to stock! Torque wise you gain +/- 80lbs, going to 197.
More power means a brake upgrade is a necessity. The customer already installed willwood calipers on the front but we upgraded to EBC discs and pads, front an rear.
We also installed Öhlins coilovers prior to installing the turbo kit, making sure that this car deserves the slogan "Jinba Ittai" even more so.
The bigger 2.0L discs in the rear also fill out the Advanti storm wheels better!
Here's also a quick reminder that we have EBC pads, discs and brake lines in stock or ready to order. You can find them right here; https://hummelink-modifications.nl/chassis/brakes
All in all, we think this is the way to make a great car even better and the best part perhaps is that every upgrade was a bolt-on, of the shelf, ready to install part!
Don't hesitate to send us an email or fill in the contact form to inquire for your ND (or NA / NB / NC of course)!
